Resiraptors vs. Precipitators: Volleyball Tournament 2016

Greetings!

Hope all is well! I know! I know! You’re all itching to hear how the 1st Annual Resiraptors vs. Precipitators Volleyball Tournament went down this past Saturday! Ok! Here’s the scoop from the most accurate source! 🙂

If you’ve talked with one of our Precipitators, you may have heard that they were victorious. This is not entirely accurate. The original tournament was set for the best out of 3 games. The Precipitators took the first game; however, the Resiraptors came back strong dominating the court with sheer power and finesse and easily won the next two.

We were elated and engaged in our celebratory Resiraptor Roar when Dr. Chow disrupted us and insisted that we play to 5 games. Who are we to argue with the Site Director? Dr. Chow wields enormous influence within the group and we felt inclined to appease him following our rehydration break.

The Resiraptors returned to the courts, possibly suffering from bloat, and subsequently lost the next two games. They were all exceptionally close matches that could have gone either way. Although the Precipitators have claimed #1, we are okay with #2 for now. Number 2 has far more substance to it and the second mouse always gets the cheese!

To acknowledge the Precipitators semi-victory, I’ll be dropping off our Henry Weinhard’s Award, best root beer this side of Manitoba, to each of your offices. Enjoy it…because next time you’re serving us! That’s right Dr. Dueck…now we got bad blood and we’re coming for you!

And the winner is…

gold-trophy

Following our R1 versus R2 volleyball match, each member of the losing team was asked to compose a limerick based on one of their field notes. R2 judges selected Dr. Rose Hsu’s as the winning entry!

There once was a man with a mole
Whose wife was a nagging old troll
1% lidocaine with epi
Simple interrupted, she said, “Let’s see”
Perfect margins, the mole left as a whole.

Love it! Congratulations Rose!!

Coffee Chat

20160617_072104Greetings R1s!

Hope all is well! As you know, we’ve begun our coffee chat series! This is where I sit down with each team member to discuss your learning journey over the next two years. And I buy you coffee!! Does it get any better?

I recently met with our new R1, Dr. Jen Chen, who shared with me a website that she and her colleagues created at the University of Calgary. Drugs for Med Students Review Series offers visitors an array of “pharmacotherapeutic presentations, pharmacy resources, and pertinent drug information tailored for the needs of medical students.” To access Rx resources and apps, click here! I’m blown away by the creativity, visuals, and effort invested in this site. Fantastic work! You’ll find Drugs for Med Students listed on our Resources & Recommended Reading page.

On another note! If you have yet to contact me for a coffee chat, please do so! My schedule over the next couple of weeks is as follows:

Monday – Friday: 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Hope to hear from you soon…

Cheers,

Jacqueline

Cardiology Primer

Untitled copy
Excerpt from Dr. Elmayergi’s Cardiology Primer

Our ARHCC Cardiologist and Preceptor, Dr. Nader Elmayergi, produced a fantastic, humour-packed primer for our Abbotsford-Mission Family Practice Residents entering their Cardiology rotation!

We are printing copies of the book for our incoming R1 cohort. I’ll contact you as soon as they are ready for distribution. If you want to grab a peak at it now, you can download the primer on our Residents page.

We thank Dr. Elmayergi for his continued commitment to our Residents’ education and their understanding of the human heart.

Warmly,

Jacqueline

1st Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament

20160623_110602

We celebrated our final academic half day with our 1st Annual Beach Volleyball Tournament held at Mission Springs Pub & Brewery! The R1s + Site Director Dr. Holden Chow competed against the R2s + Program Coach Jacqueline Ashby. It was a close match with the R1s dominating the first game. However, the R2s came back strong overtaking the R1s two games to one!20160621_162355 (1)

The R2s received the coveted Henry Weinhard Award! Best darn root beer this side of Regina! And bragging rights of course!

R1s have to compose a limerick based on their field notes and have it submitted to me by Friday, July 1. This shouldn’t be an issue since you have described on numerous occasions how valuable and instrumental the field notes have been during your learning journey :).

The limericks will be reviewed and a winner announced Friday, July 8th!

Cheers!

Jacqueline

Sea to Sky Preceptor Retreat Planning

20160626_150102
Left to Right: Dr. Alibhai, Me!, Dr. Windt, Dr. Chow, and Dr. Peters.

Last weekend, our UBC Family Practice Residency Program Abbotsford-Mission faculty scrambled up the Sea to Summit trail (6 km trail run, 1 km of vertical!) in Squamish to visit and plan for our first annual Sea to Sky Preceptor Retreat. What an amazing trek and location! We invite you to join us in October to enhance your pedagogical skills, engage with fellow physicians, and explore new territory in education.

Cheers!
